In the heart of the captivating rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His existence was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only associates. Day upon day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. During one such occasion because of sheer monotony, the shepherd here boy devised a naughty plan.
Stories of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank continued for a few more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
